A challenging expansion for Catan, in which players deploy knights to protect the island from invading barbarians and develop their towns into metropolises. A copy of the base game is required to use this set. It is also possible to combine Cities & Knights with The Seafarers of Catan.
Cities & Knights now also features new artwork and game pieces for an even better gaming experience! This expansion set is only compatible with the latest edition of the base game (the 2012 edition with plastic components).
This new edition features plastic game pieces, land tiles made of sturdier material, a redesigned inlay and handy boxes for storing the game pieces.
In Cities and Knights, you start with a city instead of a village. The game includes commodities such as coins and paper, which you receive when a number matching your city is rolled. You need these commodities to develop your cities to higher levels across three areas, with the ultimate goal of creating a metropolis, which is worth a whopping 4 points. Just like in the base game, you roll the dice at the start of your turn, but now a symbol die is added. This determines whether you earn a development card or whether the barbarian ship moves closer.
When the barbarian ship arrives on the island, players must defend themselves with knights. Knights cost 1 ore and 1 wool and must be activated with 1 grain. Anyone who fails to arm themselves properly could easily lose a city to the barbarians. However, if you have the most activated knights, you are proclaimed the saviour of Catan and rewarded with a point. To win Cities & Knights, you must manage to amass 13 points.
Cities & Knights is an exciting expansion to the base game, requiring more strategy and planning. It makes the game slightly more complex, but you’ll be rewarded with a great deal of fun in return.
